Buyback - Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS BOOK BUYBACK?
Book buyback is a service provided by The Campus Store to students who wish to sell back textbooks that they do not want to keep for future reference.
WHY SHOULD I SELL MY BOOKS BACK TO THE CAMPUS STORE?
It is an opportunity for you to help other students reduce the cost of their textbooks, while assisting you to cover the expense of your own textbook purchases by giving you cash for your unwanted books. Having a large supply of used books available is the single most significant way that The Campus Store can assist you to reduce the cost of your textbooks. You are the best source of used books. Our preference is to purchase them from you rather than from a used book supply dealer.
HOW MUCH WILL I GET BACK FOR MY BOOKS?
RETAIL
We will pay from 40-50% of the book price providing the textbook:
- Is being used for the upcoming semester
- Is needed to fill the bookstore quota
- Is in reusable condition
WHOLESALE
If The Campus Store does not have a need for the textbook the next semester, we will check the book with our wholesaler. Several factors determine what the wholesaler is willing to pay.
The factors include:
- How many copies it already has in its warehouses
- How much of a demand its buyer’s thing there will be for a book
- How many copies it thinks it may get from schools across the country
It is sometimes the case that neither The Campus Store or the Wholesaler is looking to purchase the textbook. There are several factors that could result in this decision. These factors include:
- The textbook has gone into a new edition or out of print
- A faculty member has requested that the book be purchased in the next semester with supplementary materials such as online access codes or web-based components. Publishers are not willing to sell these materials outside of the bundle.
- The Campus Store or the wholesaler has fulfilled the limit of what they can buy.
DO I NEED MY RECEIPT TO SELL BY BOOKS?
No, a receipt is not needed to sell back your books.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO BUYBACK?
- You need to have your Student ID with you to sell back your books. If for some reason you lost it, you must have a valid picture ID, such as a Driver’s License.
- If your textbook was sold as a package, all components must be intact. If any piece is missing then the book may not be bought back.
DO YOU BUY STUDY GUIDES AND WORKBOOKS?
We will not buy study guides or workbooks back for the following semester. If all the pages are intact and there is limited writing then there is a chance the wholesaler will buy it. The purchase is at the discretion of the buyer.
I DID NOT USE MY TEXTBOOK AT ALL THIS SEMESTER AND IT IS STILL SEALED. HOW COME I CANNOT RECEIVE A REFUND?
A time period is scheduled to accommodate textbook refunds at the beginning of the semester. Typically the refund period runs through the first 8 days of class. See our refund policy for more details.
WHY DO I SEE BOOKS ON THE SHELVES THE FOLLOWING SEMESTER WHEN I WAS TOLD AT BUYBACK TIME THAT AN ORDER HAD NOT YET BEEN RECEIVED FOR THOSE BOOKS?
Buyback prices are driven by professor’s book requests. Unfortunately, some book orders are received at The Campus Store after the buyback period has ended. Therefore, you received less money than you could have if the information had been known earlier.
IF I KNOW THAT A BOOK IS ONLY USED IN THE FALL SEMESTER SHOULD I TRY AND SELL IT BACK IN DECEMBER?
That is a tricky one. To receive the best price, you should wait until the May buyback. However, if the book has been around for a couple of years, you run the possibility of the title going to a new edition, resulting in the book no resale value.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SELL MY BOOKS BACK?
The chances of receiving more money for your books are better at the beginning of the week. Also, lines tend to get longer right after a test is over.
